Most small businesses in India start with the free WhatsApp Business App. As the customer list grows, the questions start: Can I send a message to 5,000 customers at once? Can three people reply from the same number? Can I send OTPs and order updates automatically? That is where the WhatsApp Business API (also called the WhatsApp Business Platform) comes in. This guide compares the two on features, limits and cost, and explains when it is time to switch.

What is the WhatsApp Business App?

The WhatsApp Business App is a free app from Meta for small businesses. You install it on a phone, create a business profile with your address, hours and catalogue, and chat with customers just like normal WhatsApp – with extras such as quick replies, labels, a greeting message and an away message.

What is the WhatsApp Business API?

The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's platform for medium and large businesses. There is no app to install – you use it through a provider such as DigitalSMS4U, either from a web panel or by connecting your own software. It is built for sending messages at scale, automation and teams.

When the Business App is enough

  • You are a small shop, clinic, tutor or freelancer.
  • One or two people reply to customers.
  • You send a few dozen messages a day and do not need automation.

Signs you need the Business API

  • You want to send offers, reminders or updates to hundreds or thousands of customers at once.
  • You need to send OTPs, order confirmations, delivery or payment alerts automatically from your website or app.
  • Several team members must reply from one number.
  • You want a chatbot for FAQs, bookings or lead capture – 24×7.
  • You need proper delivery and read reports for every campaign.
  • Your broadcast messages are not reaching people who have not saved your number.

How pricing works on the API

On the API, Meta charges for the template messages your business sends, and the rate depends on the category – marketing, utility (order and account updates) or authentication (OTPs). Replies you send inside the customer-service window after a customer messages you are charged differently from business-initiated templates. Your provider adds its own platform charge. Always ask your provider for a clear per-message rate card for each category.

Important rules on the API

  • Opt-in: you may message only customers who have agreed to receive WhatsApp messages from you.
  • Templates: business-initiated messages must use templates approved by Meta.
  • Quality rating: if many people block or report your messages, your number's quality and sending limits go down.
  • Messaging limits: new numbers start with a daily limit of unique customers, which increases as you send good-quality messages.

Can I move my existing number to the API?

Yes, a number used on the Business App can be moved to the API, but it can no longer be used in the normal app at the same time (unless your provider supports Meta's coexistence feature for that number). Many businesses keep the app on one number for personal chats and use a second number for the API.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

No. There is no monthly fee from Meta, but template messages are charged per message by category, plus your provider's platform fee.

Do I need a website or software to use the API?

No. With DigitalSMS4U you can send campaigns and reply to chats from our web panel. Developers can also connect their own software through our API.

Will my customers see a verified badge?

Customers see your business name and profile. A verified badge is given by Meta separately to eligible businesses; it is not automatic with the API.
